This guy doesn't have a name, yet, so I'm taking suggestions. I'd prefer one that might suggest a methodology for naming the other twenty-or-so, and the planned at-least-ten-more.
What's going on is that I have a show at Winston Salem's prestigious Electric Moustache gallery opening April 26.
After a couple years making
stuffed toys on kind of a work-for-hire basis, I'm striking out on my own, and trying to decide if the things I'm currently working on are even necessarily toys.
WORK PLAYLIST
Sabrepulse- Various. All his stuff is available free, mostly via bittorrent, last I checked. I'd actually pay for it if I found a way. Pleasure-center-raping 8-bit breakcore ("chipbreak"), along with some less successful but nearly as endearing forays into straight D'n'B, dubstep, Ed Banger-style hard house, etc. For the most part, it's like if Bogdan Raczynski were 8-12 years younger.
Dan Deacon-
Bromst. Mother of god. OK, just got hold of this. I've seen Dan Deacon perform several times, in Winston Salem and Asheville. Those shows rank among some of my happiest memories, no joke. It's just the most utterly silly, infectious, life-affirming music happening in our lifetimes. Dude belongs on Sesame Street the way motherfucking GROVER does. And this album is what happens when you take that, multiply it by a perilous closeness to one's 30's, and add a full band to the toy keyboards and light-up halloween decorations.
Battles-Mirrored. Slept-on. Whoops. In rating songs for the Warp20 thing, I came across an anonymous summation of my exact feelings about this album, something to the effect that, on first listen, 'holy crap this is the most annoying thing EVER", but every subsequent listen yields some compelling subtlety until you're in love. This was more or less the evolution of my relationship with
Confield, and I don't think anybody here would step to
Confield.
Black Moth Super Rainbow-
Dandelion Gum. More slept-on-ness. I had this on my computer for nearly a year before giving it my full attention. If you're not completely engaged, it might seem like a lower-fi retread of the more rhythmic end of the Boards of Canada catalog, but that's barely the half of it. The weaker parts of the album DO come a little too close to directly channeling BoC, but most of it superbly blends pastoral psychedelia and instrumental hip-hop in a way that just makes you want to cram your mouth so full of mushrooms that you can't close it and just hope for the best.
Wow, this is running way long... OK
