apb on some dumbass info

anyone know a good, legit way to rip audio from divx or avi? and for that matter, straight from a dvd? all the googlage on this topic is so diluted by eastern european scam software ads that i can't figure it out.

  1. this article seems pretty legit, and I have had luck with DVD shrink.

I am sure the mac heads have more to add, and I am behind on the game.

  2. I've only used these for DVDs, but the latter will probably work for divx and stuff (though you'd have to record real-time):

Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) good for converting video to other formats or just ripping the audio out of video. You'll probably have to install some 3rd party codecs if you need it to work with legit DVDs (http://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html) <- I have not tried installing these.

Soundflower(http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower)(Mac-only suckas!) is pretty indespensible in general. You can route audio from any program to any other program, so you can just route the output of your DVD player or Quicktime or an NES emulator running Battletoads into your DAW of choice.

  3. for DVDs on a PC, i have to second the DVDShrink recommend. Works well.

For stripping audio out of an AVI / DivX file on a Mac... I'd look for any program that wraps a GUI around ffmpeg (originally linux program that you can install in all its commandline glory with MacPorts). Handbrake is kind of like that, but it's been a long time since I used it and iirc it's more designed toward ripping DVDs. I could be wrong. ffmpeg is the shit though--you can convert the audio to a new format while you're ripping it (if e.g. you want mp3 instead of wav).
